Fuerteventura Solo Travel: How Surfing & Silence Healed Me in Morro Jable

Fuerteventura Solo Travel: How Surfing & Silence Healed Me in Morro Jable

I didn’t come to Fuerteventura for parties, nightlife, or cheap drinks. I came because I was lost.
Tired of everything. Tired of always thinking, always pleasing, always overanalyzing.
I just wanted one thing: to breathe.
Morro Jable coastline

I stayed in Morro Jable, the southernmost town of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. Its quiet Antlantic beaches and coastal breeze whisper freedom. It’s not a place for shopping or clubbing. There’s barely any noise at all. And that’s what makes it perfect. You come here for the wind, for the waves, for the version of yourself that you buried somewhere between burnout and boredom.

I lodged at the Tao Apartments, just minutes by foot from the beach: simple, serene, and perfect for resetting. The Building is clean, peaceful, with a rooftop and a quiet pool. Just across the street, a big Eurospar where I got whatever I needed. No luxury, no chaos, just simple comfort. A base. A home. For once, I didn’t have to plan every hour of my day. I let the island guide me.

Getting here was easy: I booked Canary Shuttle four days in advance (highly recommended!), and used the Tiade line bus to reach Jandía. Affordable and reliable.

Surfing Saved Me

I booked five surf lessons with OTRO MODO Surf School, and I can say this now with no doubt: they were the best part of the trip.

The instructors weren’t just skilled, they were kind. Patient. Real. They adjusted the classes each day to find the perfect conditions. You didn’t even know what time your lesson would be until the night before, which at first felt strange, but then… freeing. No overthinking. Just wake up, check your time, and show up.

Most days, we went to La Pared, a rugged beach on the west coast where the waves were wild and raw. They handed us wetsuits, boards, and taught us the rhythm of the ocean. From theory on the sand to the very moment you catch a wave, I learned a lot!

But honestly, the biggest thing I learned wasn’t technique. It was to let go. To stop fighting the current. To stop fighting myself.

I Faced My Body & Mind

There were moments I struggled. One time, I got dizzy mid-lesson. My body was shocked, swaying like I was in a car doing loops. I later found out it was seasickness. It's something nobody really talks about in surf blogs. But I got through it. I found solutions.

Here’s what I learned:

  • Ask for a longer wetsuit if you're a beginner. Your knees will thank you.
  • Hold your board tight, or you’ll come back bruised.
  • Ginger helps with dizziness (even if it’s gross), and you can get seasick tablets at the pharmacy, though they may leave you tired.
  • If it’s not seasickness, it might be water in the ears. Pro surfers use special earplugs for this.

And yeah, two and a half hours in the ocean will destroy your body. But in the best way. You come out wrecked, smiling, and proud.

Island Therapy: Wandering & Wild Beaches

Abandoned resort building at Stella Canaris, Fuerteventura

Beyond surfing, I let myself drift.

I drifted through Morro Jable, no expectations, no itinerary. Sunsets became rituals, dawns became meditations, and stargazing became my nightly therapy.

I watched sunsets alone, barefoot in the sand. I woke up at 6 AM to catch the sunrise over the water, when the world is still. I went stargazing, laying on a towel at the edge of the beach with only the waves whispering beside me.

Abandoned building in Fuerteventura

One afternoon, I explored the haunting ruins of the 5‑star resort Stella Canaris. Palm trees sprouting through crumbling halls. It was eerie, unforgettable. A reminder: things can fall apart, and still stand. It felt like I was inside The Last of Us; a lone survivor wandering through a forgotten world. Creepy? Yes. But also powerful. It made me realize: Things fall apart. And they still stand. So can I.

Hidden Beaches Only You’ll Find

Secluded beach at Playa de las Coloradas

If you like the feeling of discovering something secret, here’s what I found:

  • Playa de las Coloradas – a hidden beach you reach by walking from Morro Jable past the harbor. The trail weaves through mountains and cliffs. Once there, it’s just you. No one else. It feels like your own private world.
  • Playa de los Ojos – home to sea caves, only accessible at low tide. A bit west of town. Magical and mysterious.
  • Cofete Beach – one of the wildest, most untamed beaches I’ve seen. Bring a sturdy car. It’s hidden behind a mountain range, and the journey itself is breathtaking.
  • Jandía Beach & Lighthouse (Playa del Matorral) – calm, endless sand and a beautiful lighthouse where the light fades slowly into golden silence.

Local Eats & Evening Vibes

  • La Farola del Mar – sea‑view restaurant serving local fish, meats & traditional dishes.
  • San Borondón II – tapas bar loved by locals.
  • La Isla – burgers, bocadillos & casual tapas.
  • The Docs Steak House – perfect for meat lovers.
  • Cafetería Lemon Pie – for cakes, desserts & a sweet afternoon break.

For late‑night fun: G-Skipper Bar (billiards, darts, rooftop DJ) and Club Tortuga for dancing.

What This Trip Really Was

This wasn’t a vacation. It was an intervention. A reminder. A reckoning.

Because honestly, I didn’t go to Fuerteventura to escape life. I went there to remember it. To feel something again. To remind myself that silence is healing, that nature doesn’t ask questions, and that maybe… just maybe… I’m not as broken as I thought.

If You Feel Stuck Too

I don’t know your story. But I know this: If you ever feel like the world is too loud, your thoughts too heavy, and your life too small, then take a trip like this. Alone. Somewhere raw. Somewhere where your phone has no signal but your soul finally does.

Fuerteventura gave me space to be a beginner again. To fail. To breathe. To glide. And that, somehow, was enough.
